Saturday, July 31st, 2010

A new Modelzone store is soon to be opening in Birmingham centre and although this doesn’t sound like a very special thing at all it does in fact has its uses certainly to the people that like collecting things likemodel kits.

The Disney Way?

If you have been to a great Disney store you will know exactly what I am talking about there, the theme park ones are great. The best thing about them is that they grab the attention of shoppers by having things on show. In one of the Disney stores that I have been in there were things flying around, train sets travelling on the ceiling above and just about everything they sell was out so you could take a look at it.

Well the new Modelzone store that is being called their brand new flagship store is going to have something similar to this in that you can play around with things like a RC helicopter and other RC vehicles like RC tanks which is great. They have far from copied Disney, there is finally going to be a store open for serious model lovers where they can talk to other hobbyists, have a try at some of the great new models and get specialist knowledge from staff.

a brilliant place for hobby lovers

If you are really interested in collecting model kits or at least building them then this is the place to be. The store is going to be fantastic and if I am ever in Birmingham it is certainly a store I will be visiting.

So if you are a model enthusiast I would most certainly get yourself over to this store by the time it opens, it looks to be awesome!

The key thing to remember is that a store like this is not simply just for people interested in model kits currently, it is there to help grow people into the hobby and I feel this store is going to do it.

Did You Get My QSL Card

Saturday, July 31st, 2010

Communication comes naturally to most species, as humans we are blessed with a wonderous variety of ways to communicate. It is not possible to list every form of communication and technological innovation is adding to that list daily. Just a few hundred years ago you couldn’t communicate with someone outside of the sound of your voice. The telegraph and telephone exploded on the scene, but mass communication was really changed by the arrival of radio. When it seemed the world could not change any faster television arrived like a bomb and set the world on it ear yet again. Suddenly the world was a smaller place. Even as I type this article I can instantly communicate to anyone anywhere on the globe in any number of ways.

With the good comes the bad unfortunately, and it has not been good news for personal written communication. No-one stores email tied with a ribbon, no matter how romantic they are.

Yet some cb radio and ham radio enthusiasts have increased the use of the old written letter. Radio enthusiasts usetechnology, but they also use printed cards which they send to their contacts. These cards are refered to as QSL Cards. When broadcasting on radio, Q codes are often used. One is ‘QSL’ which means ‘did you receive my transmission’ or ‘I received your transmission’ as appropriate. QSL cards are postcards sent to confirm a conversation between two radio stations, or reception of a long distance signal. The first QSL cards were sent in 1916 to mark a communication between 8VX and 3TQ in Buffalo New York and Philadelphia Pennsylvania respectively. The standard format for them was devised in 1919 and the first European QSL card was sent in 1924, from Harlesden near London, England.

Despite the standardization most operators personalize their Q cards in some way. Often they will feature a picture of the operator and sometimes even have original artwork. All are expressions of individuality with the result that collecting the cards has become part of a radio enthusiasts hobby, whatever branch of the hobby you occupy. Although QSL cards were originally only used by radio ‘hams’ they are also used by CB enthusiasts who pick up long distance communications. To many operators these cards are badges of honor that display years of radio communications around the globe.

QSL cards can be sent though the ordinary mail, or they can go through a country’s centralized amateur radio QSL bureau, which distributes cards for that country. Expeditions to remote areas often appoint a volunteer QSL manager to keep up with all those who pick up their transmissions.

As you would expect the internet has gotten involved in all the fun. Now you can email a QSL card to someone instantly, although not as romantic as snail mail it keeps the tradition alive.

I was surprised to learn that getting involved is not really that expensive. A portable cb radio costs less then $100 and a quality 10 Meter Radio just a few hundred.

What To Look At When Choosing Binoculars For Birdwatching

Saturday, July 31st, 2010

Birdwatching is definitely an exciting pastime. Nevertheless, you will need the proper gear to completely get pleasure from it. You will need a good pair of binoculars and a bird-identification book mainly. For this post though we will concentrate (no pun intended) on what to seek out from the binoculars.

The first thing to look at in binoculars for birdwatching is how easily they can be carried through the woods or other locations you will be going to. You do not want some thing heavy or clumsy to possess close to your neck when walking. The binoculars need to be lightweight and comfortable hanging on your neck, this way you will not get tired easily as you look for birds.

Try the binoculars out within the shop prior to purchasing them to make certain they manage simple enough. Are they easy to balance and hold still? Also any of the straps need to be comfortable too for carrying the binoculars around or it does not matter how good they are.

Waterproofing is one more good quality that your binoculars must have. This will help them stand up to some difficult weather situations that you might find yourself in. You do not just watch birds on sunshiny days. Birds can be spotted on rainy days too.

These binoculars must have rubber as component of it’s armor. This will assist in situation of accidental dropping or banging. The last factor you will need to be concerned about if you spot a bird is should your binoculars are holding up below the handling.

Look at how effortless the binoculars are to focus. You need to be able to quickly focus them when you see a bird. A bird may be in flight or perched in the tree which means you must be ready to speedily concentrate on it to see it. Also think of acquiring binoculars with internal focusing since it is much less probably to acquire moisture or dirt in it.

Magnification is an additional consideration when getting binoculars. Even though 10x magnifications will get you up closer, it will take more adjusting than the 8x magnification will. So it may be much more handy to suit your needs with the 8x-magnification binoculars.

Commit some time picking out your binoculars. This way you’ll be able to much more effortlessly appreciate your birdwatching experience. With top-notch birding binoculars such as the Steiner Wildlife Pro 10.5 x28 or Peregrine 8×42 binoculars, you’ll be in a position to rapidly adjust the focus to catch a glimpse of that new species of bird you’ve got desired to see. It’s worth taking the time to ensure this will happen.

Birding Photography Basics

Saturday, July 31st, 2010

There are some people that have been into photo art for their entire life.  These are the ones who know the skill required to not just shoot a picture, but make it come alive.  The game changes a bit and becomes much more challenging when there are moving things such as cars, wildlife, and people, therefore more expertise is required.  Bird photography is one of the most demanding forms of photography known to artists, and takes a tremendous amount of skill.  It is the intention of this article to help you in learning the basics, to help you get started with photographing birds, and soon you will be photographing works of art yourself.

One of the first things you need to do to photograph birds is to know when and where to expect them.  A field guide for your area can be very helpful for this purpose, as it will tell you what birds to expect in your area in given seasons.  another helpful thing to do would be to study some well taken bird photos, and take into account the techniques used to take the photograph.  Notice details like the distance at which the photo was snapped in relation to the bird, the lighting, the focus of the bird and the background, wing position, and the background colors.  All of these factors play a part in giving the picture emotion and intimacy.

Personal preference is the main factor in what camera you should use, although name brands like Nikon or Canon are highly recommended.  As with binoculars, there is a huge difference between some $50 cheapo binoculars and some outstanding quality $1000 Nikon sport optic binoculars.  More expensive does not always mean better, but high quality cameras, lenses, and accessories will definitely cost at least an arm.  100-400mm lenses are a favorite amongst bird photographers, but those who get into it may use a 500mm f/4 telephoto lens.  Again, it is all personal preference.

One of the most vital things to take into account in any photo session is the lighting.  Mornings and evenings will give more favorable lighting conditions and will compliment how energetic the birds are, as opposed to the overly bright mid day sun.  Keep the amount of leaves in mind also; the more leaves there are, the less favorable the lighting conditions will be, and less leaves means more light.  One way to improve picture quality is to get close to the birds you are attempting to photograph.  Try to stay close to the ground and move slow, as the birds will find this less threatening, and will provide a very intimate picture of birds on the ground.

Try to be prepared even before you take the picture, and always be aware of the background.  Attach the right lens and filter to your camera before you get close to birds because sudden movements and reflections may frighten them.  If the background is cluttered, it will take away from the bird in the snapshot, so try and keep the background very distant or soft.  Remember, there is a good possibility that you will have to be very patient to get a decent photograph opportunity, or you might not get any at all.  Just plan ahead, come prepared, and be patient, and the rest will come over time.
